Abstract

Dysmenorrhea is a physical disorder in the form of stomach pain, cramps and lower back pain. In cases of severe dysmenorrhea, cramping pain is usually accompanied by vomiting and diarrhea. Risk factors for dysmenorrhea are: nutritional status, physical activity, age at menarche, family history, and length of menstruation. Dysmenorrhea not only causes disruption of daily activities but also has physical, psychological and social impacts on teenagers throughout the world. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between nutritional status and physical activity with the incidence of dysmenorrhea in 2nd Semester Nursing Students at Muhammadiyah University, Surabaya.

This research is a quantitative study with a cross-sectional approach conducted at Muhammadiyah University Surabaya in 2024. With a sample size of 38 female students using a simple random sampling method. The variables studied included nutritional status variables, physical activity variables, and dysmenorrhea. Bivariate analysis uses Spearman rank.

Univariately, the majority of respondents experienced dysmenorrhea as many as 29 people (76.3%), normal nutritional status as many as 20 people (52.6%), and moderate physical activity as many as 18 people (47.4%). The results of bivariate analysis showed a relationship between nutritional status and the incidence of dysmenorrhea (p=0.045). There is a relationship between physical activity and the incidence of dysmenorrhea (p=0.005).
